Fashion shows is all about perfection, glamour, undamaged beauty, it is all about an ideal world which shines and makes everybody dreams and fantasizes. It is a perfomance well organized and executed with the intention to dazzle the minds and the imagination of the viewers. For me what was fascinating shooting at the backstage was to observe how this shinny world was carefully constructed.
At the fashion show you watch gorgeous girl and fabulous clothes but in the backstage you watch nervous people being nervous and trying to do their job. What I see in a fashion show is flow, exhausting work, just humans trying to be perfect. Shooting at the backstage gives you the opportunity to search for segments of authenticity and at the same time question the notion of beauty. What got me at the backstage is the rhythm, everybody is running like hell so everything to be ready on time, people making up the models, the designers giving last minute advice, the models changing clothes in ten second time and the music don’t leave you in peace. So photography should follow this madness, adapt the rhythm and document the constant movement.
Everything should be faultless and ideal, the expressions they take, the movements they make, they way they behave. At the backstage things are different, you experience not ideal models by people trying to be ideal models. So I think a lot of perfection makes a great lie. Rashels says that perfection doesn’t exist and we can only find fragments of perfection inside the complete authenticity. Some models are trapped inside the shinny role they supposed to play.
Fashion show is all about creating a fairy tale, a performance that takes from the narrow streams of reality and brings to the designer’s imaginative world. Fashion show is more than clothes is about creating a parallel reality in which the designers’ creativity are the most recognizable and representative elements. Sometimes the designers’ intention is not so much to persuade us to wear the clothes they demostrate but to question the normality and the order and to argue of the value to experimenting yourself and being original
